A man stabbed in the head and his wife found with stab wounds in the backyard of their Sydney home are in induced comas after a “violent” fight, police say.

Couple found stabbed after DV-related incident

A husband and wife are in induced comas after both were found with stab wounds at their Sydney home, with police not looking for anyone else in relation to the “domestic violence-related incident”.

The couple’s daughter called emergency services to the home on Etonville Parade in Croydon, in the city’s inner west, about 8.40pm on Thursday.

“She’s come home from work and she has found the father upstairs in a serious condition,” Detective Inspector Ian Pryde told reporters in Burwood on Friday morning, adding that it was “incredibly traumatic”.

The 70-year-old man was found with stab wounds to the head, police said in a statement.

His 65-year-old wife was found in the backyard of the two-storey home with stab wounds.

A pick axe was reportedly seized from the property.

“It is believed this is a domestic violence-related incident,” Det Insp Pryde said, adding that the couple had “severe traumatic injuries”.

“Inquiries so far have found that there’s been no third party involvement in the injuries that have been sustained to either party.”

He said the couple were “not known to police adversely”.

“We’re unable to speak to either of the parties involved so we’re not able to determine what exactly has transpired,” he said.

“It’s quite clear that there’s been a violent altercation.”

NSW Police said both were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital on Thursday night.

“Police are not seeking any other parties in relation to the incident,” the force said.

Det Insp Pryde said the man and woman are in induced comas and both in a critical but stable condition.

“I don’t know what’s manifested to get to this point, we just don’t know,” he said.

One neighbour told Nine they are a “really friendly couple” and “so lovely”.

A crime scene established at the brick home was examined by forensic specialists.

Vision from outside shows forensic services officers have gathered more than a dozen brown evidence bags and were seen carrying plastic garbage bags.

“It’s always shocking, incidents like this,” Det Insp Pryde said.

“There are resources available for people that are involved in domestic violence. It should never come to this.”
