‘Three shots fired’: Officers filmed treating knife-wielding man after fatal police station shooting
Snapchat footage has emerged of distressed police and paramedics treating a knife-wielding man who was fatally shot during a violent street rampage.
Grim footage of distressed officers has emerged after a knife-wielding man was shot dead by police during a violent rampage in Western Sydney.
The film, captured on Snapchat, was filmed moments after the Indian national launched himself at two police officers with a knife, causing one to unload several fatal rounds.
He died in hospital a short time later.
“Outside Auburn police station, three shots fired,” a man is heard saying during the short clip as officers attempt to perform first aid on the attacker.
In the footage, a handful of police and paramedics are seen surrounding the man, hooking him to an IV drip.
Some of the police appear distressed while one officer can be seen holding his head in his hand.
The 32-year-old man, who was in Australia on a student visa, began his rampage at Auburn railway station targeting a random stranger shortly before midnight on Monday.
“As a result of that stabbing he received a puncture wound to his left forearm and fell to the ground,” Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said.
“He continued with a further frenzied slash and the 28-year-old victim suffered a puncture wound to the hip region.”
Neither man was known to one another.
A few short minutes later, the 32-year-old was spotted through the glass sliding doors of Auburn police station.
“He was hyperventilating and looking in the direction of the station,” Mr Smith said.
It was then that a triple-0 call came through the station and an alert was issued for “responding officers” to attend the scene of the stabbing.
Two officers – including one probationary constable – attempted to leave the station but were confronted by the 32-year-old who allegedly launched at the them with the knife, police explained in a press conference on Tuesday.
One officer pulled out a gun while the other pulled out a taser as they backed into the station.
The man was hit by two of the three shots fired by police before receiving first aid until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.
He was taken to Westmead Hospital but died a short time later.
A picture taken from the scene shows a bullet hole through the glass door of the station. A first aid kit appears to be on the floor inside the building.
Mr Smith said the CCTV footage was “highly concerning”.
The man is yet to be formally identified.
The cleaner was treated by paramedics at the station before he was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.
“He was just going about his duties and was the first person that was there,” Mr Smith said.
Mr Smith said investigators would work with departments overseas to determine who the man was.
“Investigators from the critical incident team led by homicide are reaching out to the Indian Consulate to confirm his identity. That process is expected to be delayed,” he said.
“We are leaving no stone unturned in establishing the intent of this individual.
“I need to reassure the public, this is a lone actor event.
“I fully support these officers. It’s traumatic, it’s a significant incident in one of our police stations.”
A critical incident investigation is underway including officers from Counter Terrorism and the Terrorism Intelligence Unit who worked through the night to provide a profile of the man.
