A kickboxer has been charged with murdering his partner in a hotel room.
The body of Shirley So, 50, was discovered with multiple stab wounds by police at the Pullman Hotel in Penrith, NSW, on Sunday afternoon, after staff called them to the premises following reports of a disturbance.
Darren John Berry, who fought in the MMA under the name “Hacksaw”, was found inside the same room with cuts to his arms and hands, police say.
The 53-year-old was treated at the scene by paramedics, and taken to Westmead Hospital under police guard.
Mr Berry’s injuries were deemed to be life-threatening, but police now believe he will survive.
Officers from Strike Force Marree charged Mr Berry on Tuesday with one count of murder, after being granted an interim order to carry out a forensic procedure on him.
He was refused bail at a bedside court hearing, and is scheduled to appear before Penrith Local Court on Wednesday.
Police will allege that Mr Berry and Ms So were in an off-and-on relationship, but said there had been no reports of domestic violence between the pair.
Ms So is the 81st woman to be allegedly killed in Australia this year, according to Australian Femicide Watch founder Sherele Moody.
She is the 11th woman to be allegedly killed in the last 19 days.
