Convicted killer Mert Ney, who was jailed for decades for murdering a Sydney sex worker, has attacked a prison guard with a makeshift weapon.

A notorious murderer who was jailed for decades for viciously stabbing a sex worker to death during a bloody rampage, has attacked a prison guard with a makeshift weapon.

Mert Ney shocked Sydney in August 2019 when he murdered Michaela Dunn and ran through the streets brandishing a knife, stabbing another woman before he was subdued by brave good Samaritans.

He was jailed for more than 40 years, with Supreme Court Justice Peter Johnson describing his actions as a “cruel, brutal and terrifying attack made for no reason”.

Ney is being housed at the state’s most secure prison, Goulburn Supermax.

The officer was taken to hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries to his chest.

“At approximately 10.30am on Friday, 5 July 2024 an inmate used a gaol-made weapon to assault an officer inside the High Risk Management Unit at Goulburn Correctional Centre,” a Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman said.

The weapon was taken away from Ney as fellow officers secured the scene.

NSW Police said the makeshift weapon had been seized for forensic examination and officers from the Hume Police District had interviewed Ney.

Mert Ney was jailed for decades for his bloody rampage.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Ney was sentenced to 44 years in jail, with a non-parole period of 33 years over the murder of Ms Dunn.

His earliest release was reduced by three years after he successfully appealed to the Court of Criminal Appeal in October last year.

In October 2021, Ney was convicted of assaulting a corrections officer while in jail, for which he was sentenced to 15 months jail.

He was also convicted and sentenced to 12 months for setting his cell on fire.

In February last year, Ney was sentenced to 15 months jail for throwing boiling water on a fellow inmate.
