Heavily-armoured police deploy tactical weapons in dramatic truck pursuit, footage shows
Footage shows heavily-armoured police swarming a stolen truck and using weapons to nab the driver, leaving apparent bullet holes in the windscreen.
The moment police finally managed to stop a stolen truck in Sydney’s west on Monday has been captured by police helicopter cameras.
Heavily-kitted tactical officers swarmed the vehicle after it had been rammed to a stop in Smithfield at the intersection of the Cumberland Highway and Sturt Street.
One officer from the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) appears to fire a weapon directly into the cab of the truck leaving holes in the windscreen, while another appears to disable its tyres using a similar weapon.
A police spokesperson said no live rounds were fired in the incident and the holes were the result of other “tactical options” being deployed by police.
The 33-year old driver has been arrested and was taken to hospital for treatment to an injured shoulder.
Police were notified early on Monday that the vehicle had been stolen from a home in Lidcombe overnight.
Following inquiries, they were able to find and attempted to stop the vehicle as it travelled along the Western Motorway near Reservoir Road in Blacktown shortly before 9am.
The driver allegedly failed to stop for police, who initiated a pursuit.
As the chase continued across Sydney’s south and southwest, police on several occasions made the decision to disengage and allow the vehicle to be tracked by helicopter.
Road spikes were also used in an attempt to stop the vehicle.
The chase only came to an end when police managed to wedge the truck up against a larger semi trailer.
As TOU police surrounded the vehicle, the driver allegedly continued to resist and attempted to assault the officers.
Police have appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.
