Griffith: Man charged over alleged street bashing, elderly man hospitalised
A man has been charged and an 80-year-old man is in a serious condition after allegedly being beaten up on a street in front of horrified onlookers.
An elderly man has suffered several facial fractures following a horrific attack in the middle of the street in the NSW Riverina region.
Officers were called to Yambil St, Griffith, just before 7pm on Saturday after an 80-year-old man was confronted by a younger man before being allegedly shoved to the ground and beaten.
Horrified witnesses were forced to intervene, prompting the accused attacker to flee the scene on foot.
Paramedics treated the elderly man before he was rushed to Griffith Base Hospital with several facial fractures.
He has since been flown to Canberra Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
Following investigations and a public appeal for information, detectives attended a home in Griffith about 3pm on Monday and arrested a 43-year-old man.
He was taken to Griffith police station and charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The accused was refused bail and is due to appear in Griffith Local Court on Tuesday.
