Driver stabbed in violent road rage attack at traffic lights in Sydney
Police are searching for a man who allegedly stabbed a driver through his car window in a violent road rage attack in Sydney.
A 46-year-old driver is in intensive care after he was allegedly stabbed through his open car window while stopped at traffic lights in Sydney during a violent road rage attack on Sunday night.
Police are still looking for the suspect.
At about 8pm on Sunday, police were told two men in a black Toyota Aurion stopped next to the victim’s white Toyota Yaris at the intersection of the Hume Highway and Cabramatta Road in Sydney’s south-west.
It is alleged the passenger in the black car got out and approached the victim’s car, and there was a brief argument.
“Then the person with the knife reached into the vehicle through the window where he stabbed the person in the abdomen,” Detective Superintendent Michael McLean said on Monday.
The victim was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a serious but stable condition where he underwent surgery.
NSW Ambulance Acting Inspector Matt Johnston said the fact he had to undergo surgery, “suggests there’s some kind of underlying complication that may not be visible from the outside.”
It is understood the victim was able to drive a short distance and pull over safely after the attack.
“It was fortunate that no one else was more seriously injured in this incident,” Acting Insp. Johnston said.
Det Supt. McLean said the attack was “troubling” and police are yet to determine if the parties knew each other or if it was a random attack.
“But most often these things don’t just occur for no particular reason,” he said, assuring the public don’t need to be concerned.
He said the victim was known to police.
Officers are still searching for the driver and passenger of the black Toyota Aurion, described as two men of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean appearance.
They are also investigating if an earlier incident, involving a woman driving a white SUV, is linked to the stabbing.
Witnesses and motorists with dashcam footage are asked to contact Fairfield Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
