Bankstown man Jamil Ahmed Chowdhury charged with sexually assaulting, grooming teen girl for sex

A western Sydney man was arrested after he was detained by the mother of a teenage girl he had groomed and sexually assaulted, police say.

What to do if you think a child is being abused

A worried mother took control of her teen daughter’s social media accounts to “lure” an alleged predator into her home where he was met by an angry father and waiting police officers, a court has been told.

Police allege Jamil Ahmed Chowdhury groomed a girl, 14, he met online over several weeks and went to her western Sydney home for sex.

Mr Chowdhury, 22, was arrested at the girl’s house in Villawood on Monday night after her mother lured him to the property following the alleged discovery of explicit messages he sent her daughter.

The IT student and Bangladeshi national has been charged with having sexual intercourse with a child between 14 and 16 years and grooming a child for sex.

He was refused bail at Fairfield Local Court on Tuesday, with Magistrate Theo Tsavdaridis saying Mr Chowdhury’s claim the girl had hacked his accounts and sent explicit texts to herself “defies credulity”.

Police will allege in court the part-time Woolworths worker began chatting to the girl on social media apps, including Snapchat and Instagram, in December.

The court was told that after an “extraordinarily high number” of texts, the pair agreed to meet at the teen’s home, which she shares with her parents, and “began kissing” when he arrived.

Police allege the Bankstown man slid his hand inside the girl’s underpants and digitally penetrated her.

The girl then performed oral sex on him, the court was told.

Police allege the Bangladeshi national made repeated requests to meet with the girl.

After the incident, the two exchanged messages discussing the alleged sex acts, which the court was told were discovered by the girl’s mother.

She is alleged to have contacted Mr Chowdhury and warned him her daughter was underage and what he was doing was illegal.

He and the girl continued, however, to talk online and “professed their love” for each other on social media, according to court documents.

It is alleged that despite knowing her age, Mr Chowdhury made repeated requests to meet with the girl again.

He will remain in custody and is due to enter pleas next month.

Mr Tsavdaridis said soon after, the mother took over her daughter’s accounts and hatched a plan.

On Monday night, Mr Chowdhury was “lured to the home where police were waiting and arrested him” at about 7pm, the magistrate said.

Footage aired by the Ten Network shows a man believed to be girl’s father confronting the accused, who is shielding his face with his hands.

The girl’s mother said parents needed to be vigilant.

“I found a couple of messages on social media where alarm bells started to ring off in my head,” she told the network.

“Please look after your kids. Track everything. Do not let them sit in a separate room on their own. Know what your kids are up to. I fear for the safety of all of them.”

The accused was taken to Fairfield police station where he denied writing any of the messages and blamed the teenager – claiming she signed into his account to send the texts to herself.

Mr Tsavdaridis dismissed Mr Chowdhury’s bail application on Tuesday, saying if found guilty it was likely the international student could face prison.

Both offences carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in custody.

The matter was adjourned to the same court on February 9 when a plea is expected to be entered.
