Armed man shot by cops, woman arrested at The Entrance
A man is fighting for his life after being wounded in a gun battle with police. New dramatic details have emerged about the incident.
A man armed with two guns was shot in the neck by police after ramming a cop car on the NSW central coast, police have said.
The dramatic incident at The Entrance left the man in critical condition, saw several roads closed and sent a school into lockdown on Wednesday morning.
Police said they began chasing the 30-year-old after he rammed a police cruiser with a Misubishi Lancer on Tuggerah Parade around 10.20am.
The vehicle pursuit ended further along the same road, where police saw the man run from the car alongside a woman.
The man was spotted carrying both a long gun and a pistol, police said.
Officers gave chase on foot towards Gosford Avenue, before a gunfight broke out. Shots were fired by the police and the man, and the man was struck in the neck.
Paramedics treated the man on the spot before he was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital. As of 2.30pm, the man was still in critical condition, police said.
The 43-year-old woman was arrested on Broonarra Street, shortly after the gun battle, and taken to Wyong Police Station.
Police have declared a critical incident and a special team from Lake Macquarie Police District will investigate “all circumstances surrounding the incident”, police wrote in a media release. There will also be an independent review of that investigation, police said.
The Entrance Public School principal Dave Stitt said in a statement to parents the school was in lockdown and all students had been accounted for and were safe.
“When local police give us the OK, we will be able to open the school up again,” he said on Wednesday morning.
