Alleged Swansea Bridge fisherman attack: Wild footage leads to arrest as man charged with affray after Newcastle attack

An alleged rampage at a popular fishing spot was caught on camera, leading to a man turning himself in to police.

Wild footage of a fisherman allegedly being attacked during a late-night rampage last weekend has led to a man’s arrest.

The incident unfolded on the Swansea Bridge, south of Newcastle, early on Sunday morning.

It is known as a popular spot for recreational fishing, but a video taken by one angler allegedly showed a man appearing to push, kick, and strike at a number of fishermen.

A man has since been charged with affray after footage was shared on a YouTube channel dedicated to finding the alleged culprit.

In the footage, one fisherman appears to be shoved and forced into a railing protecting the bridge’s walkway from traffic, sending him crashing to the ground.

The person filming jumps over the railing as the assailant approaches.

“Hey, what the f*** is your problem? What’s going on?” he asks.

“Are you all right?

The man can be heard to respond: “Wanna have a go?”

He is then shown walking out of view before allegedly attacking another man.

The footage appears to show the two men grappling, with the person recording saying, “Leave him alone mate”.

At one point, the alleged attacker appears to aim a kick at the head of the victim, who fell off balance just in time to avoid it.

“Just go off the way you’re going,” the older man says.

“F*** off,” the alleged attacker said before turning and walking away.

The video posted to YouTube shows the filmer contacting the police and providing them with his footage.

In a statement, NSW Police said officers were called to Swansea Bridge about 2.40am on Sunday morning following reports of an assault.

Officers were told two unknown men allegedly approached a group of fishermen on the bridge before throwing fishing equipment into the water.

“During the incident, police were told the two men allegedly assaulted a 24-year-old fisherman before leaving the scene,” police said in a statement.

“An investigation into the incident commenced, and about 6pm on Monday, 27 October 2025, police arrested a 28-year-old man at Belmont Police Station.

“He was issued a Court Attendance notice for affray and will appear before Belmont Local Court on Wednesday, 10 December 2025.

“Inquiries are ongoing.”
