Woman accused of abusing granddaughter, sharing footage to TikTok
A woman accused of sexually abusing her two-year-old granddaughter and sharing the footage on TikTok is back in court.
A 50-year-old woman accused of repeatedly sexually abusing her young granddaughter and posting the abuse material on TikTok remains on bail.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, fronted court for the second time on Tuesday after being charged earlier this month with multiple offences.
Her family members accompanied her to the ACT Magistrates Court where she sat in silence as her legal representative asked for time to find a Legal Aid lawyer to be allocated to her.
Magistrate Ian Temby granted the woman, who will also require a Nepalese interpreter in court, a three-week adjournment and said her bail conditions would continue until her next court appearance.
The woman was arrested on February 5 after police searched a home in Canberra’s south.
She was charged with aggravated acts of indecency against a child under 10 years, using a child to produce aggravated child exploitation material and using a carriage service for child abuse materials
She was granted bail in the ACT Magistrates Court the following day.
The Australian Federal Police Child Protection Triage Unit began investigating the case after being alerted to newly produced child abuse material being uploaded to social media on January 27.
The AFP said TikTok reported the material to the Australian Centre To Counter Child Exploitation and subsequently assisted police with their investigation.
The investigation was handed over to the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse team and the ACT Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team before the woman’s arrest.
The case is due to return to court on March 21.
