Update for man hit with terrorism charges following Westfield incident
A man was earlier this year charged with terrorism offences after he allegedly threw chemicals inside a Westfield shopping centre.
A Sydney man charged with terrorism offences following an incident at a popular Sydney shopping centre during which he allegedly threw chemicals inside a bathroom will in the coming weeks learn more about the allegations against him.
The 21-year-old man was arrested following a July 24 incident at Westfield Miranda Shopping Centre after officers responded to reports of a man throwing bottles inside a level 1 bathroom.
Police seized a knife, bottle and other items during his arrest.
The man was charged with possessing a non-firearm for discharging irritant, custody of knife in a public place, and leave/sending a substance creating a false belief of danger.
He was taken to hospital for treatment and assessment.
When police searched a home in southern Sydney, they seized chemicals, mobile phones and electronic devices.
In August, he was further charged with knowingly collecting/making a document connected with terrorism and doing an act in preparation for a terrorist act.
No pleas have been entered to any of the charges.
NSW Police previously said the man had “mixed and unclear ideological beliefs”.
The man has been in custody on remand since his arrest, and his matter was briefly mentioned in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday.
The court was told his legal team arrived in court expecting to be served a brief of evidence; however, that did not occur.
That’s now expected to happen in the coming weeks, with the court told that he had been moved to Goulburn Correctional Centre where his lawyers were hoping he would undergo psychological assessment.
The court previously made an interim order to suppress the man’s identity, with the matter to be the subject of legal argument at a later date.
He will reappear in court later this year.
