Teenagers, 18 and 19, arrested following Blockade Australia climate protests in Sydney

Two young women are the latest to be charged in relation to climate protests which brought Sydney to a standstill.

‘Very disruptive’ week in Sydney

Two teenagers have been charged following Blockade Australia climate protests which brought Sydney to a standstill.

The group caused major disruptions during the protests throughout Sydney’s CBD on Monday and Tuesday.

However, their plans to protest on Wednesday were interrupted by police officers who targeted their picnic, while Polair helicopters and riot squads were used to stop disruptions to the city.

Emergency services rushed to William and Palmer Streets at Woolloomooloo on Tuesday morning after reports protesters had walked into the intersection and were disrupting traffic.

Up to 11 people were arrested at the scene and remain before the courts, but a number of people fled the location.

NSW Police on Saturday said a further two teenage girls had been charged, bringing the amount of arrests to 37 since Strike Force Guard operations began in May to “disrupt unauthorised protests”.

Strike force officers arrested the 18 and 19-year-old at Pitt Street in the city’s CBD about 4.30pm Friday.

Both were charged with wilfully preventing free passage of people or cars and obstructing driver’s paths.

They were issued court attendance notices and will face Downing Centre Local Court on September 1.

Blockade Australia had planned to take to the streets every day this week to protest the inaction on climate change, however they chose to call off the protest on Thursday.

“We have made the hard choice to end the mobilisation and wait until next time when we are bigger and stronger,” they said on the Telegram messaging platform via the Blockade Australia: Resist Climate Inaction channel on Thursday.

“We call on people to continue to take disruptive climate action in any way they can.”

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet earlier this week described the protesters as “bloody idiots”.

“You want to push your cause – all you’re doing is making people move away from your cause as quickly as possible. It also endangers people,” Mr Perrottet told reporters on Tuesday.

“It is completely unacceptable.”

Protesters could face a fine of up to $22,000 and/or jail for a maximum of two years for protesting illegally on public roads, rail lines, tunnels, bridges and industrial estates.
