Student David Azzi ‘covered up cop hit-and-run’
A STUDENT allegedly ran over a police officer while speeding at more than 100km/h then tried to cover his tracks.
A YOUNG man studying to become a paramedic allegedly ran over a police officer while speeding at more than 100km/h then tried to cover his tracks by ringing CrimeStoppers to make a false report, a court has heard.
David Azzi, 22, was refused bail in Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday, six weeks after he allegedly mowed down Sr Constable Stuart Shaw in Sydney’s southwest when the officer stepped out on the road to try to pull him over.
Police allege in court papers that they saw Azzi driving his blue Mazda 3 at 121km/h in a 70km/h zone along Roberts Rd, Greenacre, at about 8.27pm on September 5.
In the hours immediately after the incident the university student, who has been accepted into the Australian Defence Force Gap Year program, allegedly called CrimeStoppers and made a false report.
Police will also allege Azzi asked for advice on Facebook about how to repair his car as he tried to cover up his crime.
Azzi is facing nine charges, including failing to stop and assist after a collision, and making a false statement to police. He has not entered a plea.
Shocking footage shows the officer trying to leap over the car as it hurtles towards him, with the Mazda collecting the young officer, sending him crashing into the car’s windshield and rolling off over the passenger side of the car and back onto the road. Incredibly, he survived without major injuries.
