Speed to be examined in horror crash that killed two teens

A magistrate has issued a heartfelt message to the family of two teens killed in a horror crash in which the car split in two.

Australia's Court System

Almost a dozen family members of two teenagers killed in a horror crash in Sydney’s southwest have been thanked as the alleged driver returns to court almost a year on.

Nicholas Thew, 28, was not required to appear before Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday as he faces 10 driving-related charges over the November 6, 2023 crash.

Police allege Mr Thew was driving a grey Ford sedan at speeds of 45km/h more than the 50km/h limit in Ashcroft when the car smashed into a tree and power poll, splitting it in half.

Two teenage passengers, aged 13 and 14, were declared dead at the scene, and a 23-year-old was also injured. Mr Thew was able to free himself before allegedly fleeing.

The young father’s lawyer told magistrate Peter Thompson they were seeking a two-week adjournment while waiting for the outcome of an expert report into speed.

Mr Thompson said the report would examine the speed of the vehicle and could determine aggravating factors of the alleged offence.

He told the scores of family packed into the courtroom in shirts calling for “justice” for the two teens that they were “entitled to be part of this process”.

Police previously alleged Mr Thew would have known the crash could have caused the deaths of his two teenage passengers but instead was caught on camera fleeing.

He faces charges including two counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death and failing to stop and assist after an impact occasioning death, and driving without ever holding a licence.

He is yet to enter any pleas and will return to court next month.
