Salim Mehajer convicted, fined for burnout in white Ferrari
Salim Mehajer was back in court on Monday after he was spotted by police ripping a burnout in his luxury $300,000 Ferrari.
Disgraced developer Salim Mehajer’s love of fast cars has cost him $1000 and two convictions after he was busted ripping a burnout in his white Ferrari last year.
Mehajer was seen speeding away from traffic lights in Rozelle, in Sydney’s inner west, at 10.46pm on April 26, with his luxury $300,000 vehicle drifting across a lane of traffic as its wheels spun out.
Police officers who were stopped at the same intersection on The Crescent estimated the car to be moving at up to 100km/h in a 70 zone, according to court documents.
The cops pulled over the now 34-year-old and issued him with $1000 in fines for two offences; operating a vehicle to cause the driving wheels to undergo sustained loss of traction and exceeding the speed limit by up to 20km/h.
He took the fines to court but on Monday entered pleas of guilty before Central Local Court.
Magistrate Clare Farnan upheld the punishment, and convicted him of both charges.
Documents before the court state Mehajer’s Ferrari was observed to “harshly accelerate” toward the Anzac Bridge near James Craig Road before sliding sideways into the next lane.
“The driver has continued to harshly accelerate which has sustained the loss of traction with the roadway for a short period of time,” the statement read.
“Once the rear wheels of the white Ferrari regained traction the driver has continued to harshly accelerate.
“I estimated the speed of the white Ferrari to be no more than 100km/h, but no less than 90km/h in the sign posted 70km/h zone.”
When stopped the former Auburn deputy mayor told police he was driving quickly because “I was trying to get away from those guys”, the court heard.
The incident came amid Sydney’s coronavirus lockdown and Mehajer was also asked his reason for being out of home.
Mehajer replied that he was returning home to his former Vaucluse property after spending the day working at his Lidcombe office.
In court this week he was fined $700 for causing his vehicle to lose traction and $300 for the speeding offence.
Mehajer was in 2015 ordered to pay $1.7 million in a civil case after two women were seriously injured when he crashed a black Ferrari on The Boulevard in Lidcombe.
The women, who suffered serious leg and pelvis injuries, sued him in the District Court over the 2012 crash.
