Phillip Papaefthymiou, 42, charged with alleged murder of man at Rushcutters Bay apartment block

A man has appeared in court with a black eye after he was charged with murdering a man in a Sydney basement carpark.

A man accused of murdering another man inside a Sydney eastern suburbs car park sported a large black eye as he appeared in court for the first time.

Phillip Papaefthymiou, 42, has been accused of killing a 39-year-old man inside a Rushcutters Bay apartment block on Wednesday afternoon.

Christopher Roy Stanmore was found unresponsive in the building’s basement before he later died in hospital, with police charging Mr Papaefthymiou with his murder.

Mr Papaefthymiou was arrested near the Rushcutters Bay building after police received reports of an alleged assault at the Kings Cross Road complex.

Mr Papaefthymiou will remain in custody after he did not apply for bail when he appeared at Central Local Court on Thursday afternoon.

The court heard that police were set to apply to take a blood sample from Mr Papaefthymiou for forensic testing.

Appearing from Surry Hills Police Station, Mr Papaefthymiou had a large black bruise on his left eye.

NSW Police said on Wednesday they did not believe it was a random attack and they were investigating the men’s relationship.

Paramedics performed CPR on Mr Stanmore but he died after he was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital.

Mr Papaefthymiou was also taken to hospital under police guard before being charged with murder.
