Nursing home worker Garry Davis jailed for murder
NURSING home worker Garry Davis has been sentenced to at least 30 years jail for murdering two elderly residents using deadly doses of insulin.
FORMER nursing home worker Garry Steven Davis has been sentenced to at least 30 years jail for murdering two elderly residents using deadly doses of insulin.
The NSW Supreme Court today sentenced the 29-year-old to 40 years jail, with a non-parole period of 30 years after he was found guilty of murdering two patients, and the attempted murder of a third person.
Davis killed the elderly patients at SummitCare aged care facility at Wallsend by giving them lethal doses of insulin.
He was convicted following a trial without a jury of murdering Gwen Fowler, 83 and Ryan Kelly, 80 and the attempted murder of Audrey Manuel, 91.
He maintained his innocence and has exercised his right to remain silent.
“Accordingly, it remains a complete mystery ... why he carried out these abominable crimes and why he chose these particular victims,” the judgment noted.
In the NSW Supreme Court in Newcastle on Tuesday, Justice Robert Allan Hulme referred to the vulnerability of the victims, the extreme breach of trust by Davis and the tragic and extreme consequences of his conduct.
“The court was unable to make a finding that he (Davis) was unlikely to reoffend given that there is a complete void when it comes to understanding why he did what he did,” the judgment noted.
