NSW sex attacker who locked woman in house says he respects women
A NEW South Wales court has heard how an attacker barricaded a front door with a couch and forced a woman to perform a sex act on him.
A MAN cried while telling a judge he respects women but alcohol, drugs and a mental health condition led him to sexually assault a woman he locked in a NSW house.
Stanley Robin Doolan on Tuesday told the District Court in Sydney he was sorry and saddened by his “stupid behaviour” and, while he had no memory of the attack, he took full responsibility for it.
The 34-year-old has previously pleaded guilty to the aggravated sexual assault and threat to inflict actual bodily harm on the woman, and to using a knife to cause another male to fear physical harm, in October 2015 at the house in Bathurst in the state’s Central West.
Last year, Judge John Pickering heard sentencing submissions on behalf of the Crown and Doolan, commenting that he “is going to receive a lengthy sentence”. He allowed Doolan to get into the witness box on Tuesday and read out a statement, which included revealing being abused as a child, memories of which had been reactivated by speaking to his sister.
“I’m not a bad man,” he said, but admitted using drugs and alcohol to deal with his past and said he was sickened by his offending.
Agreed facts presented at an earlier hearing said Doolan, a man and a woman were at a house in Bathurst when Doolan threw $10 at the man to buy cask wine from a neighbour.
Later, after litres of wine, Doolan demanded the man return his $10. Taking a 30cm-long carving knife and a carving fork from the kitchen, he “kept screaming about the money and yelled that he was going to kill (the man and woman)” unless he got his money back.
Then he locked the doors to the house.
Doolan told the pair to go to the bedroom and he tried to force the man to have sex with the woman. The man refused and ran from the house seeking help, with Doolan grabbing at his legs as he ran through the door.
Doolan then barricaded the front door with a couch and forced the woman to perform a sex act on him.
When she refused, he “would slap her with the knife blade in the forehead”, the facts state.
She was “crying and shaking” and could hear people banging on the door.
Judge Pickering is expected to sentence Doolan later on Tuesday.
