New details as bucks party rapists Maurice Hawell, Andrew David and Marius Hawell fight sentences
New details have emerged after a group of men found guilty of gang raping three teenagers during a bucks party are fighting their sentences.
A group of men convicted of gang raping three teenagers during a bucks party weekend will front a two-day hearing after they launched an appeal to fight their sentences.
Maurice Hawell, 30, Andrew David, 30, and Marius Hawell, 23, were found guilty of gang raping three teenagers at an Airbnb during a bucks party weekend in Newcastle in February 2022.
They were each jailed over the gang rape of two 18-year-old friends and a 19-year-old girl over the course of two nights.
All three have continued to maintain their innocence.
Following their convictions last year, all three men recently filed notices of their intention to appeal with the Supreme Court.
The matter was listed for call-over in the NSW Supreme Court in Sydney on Thursday morning; however, acting registrar Peter Clayton said he had excused parties from attending.
“I have given orders and directions in chambers,’ Mr Clayton told the court.
He said he had ordered a two-day hearing for the matters on August 21 and 22.
The men were found guilty last July of engaging in a joint criminal enterprise to sexually assault the women after a weeks-long trial in the NSW District Court.
Maurice Hawell was sentenced to a maximum term of 14 years, with an eight-year and six-month non-parole period. He will be eligible for release in January 2033.
Marius Hawell was given a nine-year sentence, with a non-parole period of five years and five months.
David was sentenced to 13 years in jail and will be eligible for release on parole after serving seven years and nine months in April 2032.
