A MENTALLY ill Sydney man who killed his sleeping mother in her bed with a pitchfork in the middle of the night had a very loving relationship with her, a judge has been told.

Nathan Connors, 29, has pleaded guilty on the basis of substantial impairment to the manslaughter of Lynda Connors, 55, in May 2017 at the Sylvania home, in south Sydney, they shared.

At his sentence hearing in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday, his barrister Sophia Beckett said the mother and son had a very loving relationship and “she was his main support, his only support, at the time”.

Court documents state the murder could have taken place between 5pm on Mother’s Day and 6.30am on May 15, 2017 at the Sylvania townhouse.

Earlier, the court heard that Ms Connors’ eldest son Simon, 31, allegedly found the woman wrapped up in a blanket with “blood everywhere” after he returned home from a night shift. She is believed to have suffered extensive injuries.

Nathan Connors, also known as Nathan White, was arrested 15km away while driving his dead mother’s car on the Princes Highway in St Peters.

The court heard that a pitchfork, found in the car, was the murder weapon.

A crossbow was also found in the vehicle, along with the family’s pet schnauzer.

Both of the sons lived with their mother at the Florida St home.

The older brother was reportedly “very distraught” after discovering the body.

A man who went to Sylvania High School with Nathan Connors previously said he had a serious motorbike accident three years ago.

“He came off a motorbike and hit a pole,” he said. “He had to have surgery to his face.”

He said Mr Connors had “kept to himself” since the accident.
