Date night has led to a court date for a man and woman who were allegedly both caught driving drunk in the same car after a boozy night out in Canberra.

The woman, 25, and man, 29, will face court after police allegedly busted them both driving a Holden Barina in separate vehicle stops in the space of an hour on Friday night.

ACT Police said they stopped the woman, who held a provisional license, at the intersection of Gundaroo Drive and Gungahlin Drive, Gungahlin about 11.04pm.

Police will allege in court she returned a reading of .085 on a roadside breath test.

The lovebirds were pulled over on Friday night, police said.

During the stop, the male passenger was warned not to drive as officers believed he was intoxicated, police said in a statement.

Officers saw the same Barina mount a kerb and come to a stop at nearby Bruning Street at about 11.50pm.

When they approached the car they saw the 29-year-old man in the driver’s seat and he was breathalysed, police said.

Police will allege he returned a reading of 0.199, nearly four times the legal limit.

Both drivers had their licenses suspended on the spot and were charged with drink driving.

The man was also charged with resisting a territory official.

ACT Police have used the incident to highlight the importance of planning ahead.

The Bonner man was granted bail to appear at the ACT Magistrates Court on March 22.

The woman, from Kambah, is scheduled to face the same court on May 3.

ACT Police Inspector Rachel Hutka said such behaviour underscored the importance of planning your evening.

“You should always have a plan for the end of your night. Just because you’ve swiped right early in the evening, it doesn’t mean you’ll be right to drive later on,” Inspector Hutka said.

“There are many ways to get home safely, including taxis, ride share services, or someone in your group staying sober.

“We have arranged dates in court for both of these people.”
