Teen charged with murder after fatal Darwin bottle shop stabbing

A teenager has been charged with murder after a 20-year-old man working at a drive-through bottle shop was fatally stabbed on Sunday.

A 19-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a 20-year-old man after he was fatally stabbed while working at a drive-through bottle shop.

Police were alerted to the stabbing at about 9pm on Sunday and arrived at a bottle shop on McMillians Rd in Jingili, a northern suburb of Darwin, where paramedics declared Declan Laverty dead.

The man who stabbed Mr Laverty had fled the scene but was arrested early on Monday morning.

The 19-year-old has been charged with one count of murder and one count of aggravated robbery and was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on Tuesday.

Two other male teens, aged 15 and 16, were charged with two counts of aggravated robbery for their alleged involvement in incidents in Karama and Rapid Creek just prior to the stabbing in Jingili.

Both were remanded to appear in court on Tuesday.

A 17-year-old boy was also arrested on Monday evening and has been charged with one count of aggravated robbery over the alleged Rapid Creek incident. He has been bailed to appear in court on April 17, 2023.

Just before his death, Mr Laverty sent a final heartbreaking message to his father, who told local radio station Mix104.9 that his son had sent him a text after the incident that read “I love you Dad, I have just been stabbed”.

Mr Laverty’s father told the radio station that his son was studying and had been working at the bottle shop but was planning to find another job.

Police are calling for members of the public to check their CCTV footage in search of a 2014 blue Toyota Camry with Northern Territory registration CE71BI seen between 5pm on Sunday, March 19 and 4am on Monday, March 20.

The car is believed to have been in the suburbs of Karama, Alawa, Coconut Grove, Jingili and Rapid Creek.
