NT Fire and Rescue’s come and try days give aspiring firefighters a taste of the job
Darwin locals put their strength to the test last weekend, with Alice Springs next in line for a firefighting challenge.
Northern Territory Fire and Rescue is on the hunt for its next generation of firefighters, with come and try days giving aspiring recruits a first-hand taste of the job’s physical demands.
Last Saturday, 36 participants tackled the gruelling Physical Aptitude Test (PAT) at the Darwin Showgrounds, hauling hoses, lifting heavy equipment, and simulating rescues.
A second session is set for Alice Springs this Saturday, March 29, at St Philip’s College.
Those keen to take part must register online.
Acting Senior Station Officer Daniel Carr-Smith said the event was an opportunity for people to assess their fitness before recruitment opened in June.
“The come and try day allows them to give it a go, and if necessary, ramp up their training in time for our next recruitment drive in June,” he said.

The PAT is a crucial step in becoming a career firefighter, simulating real-life scenarios with tasks such as carrying 26kg jerry cans and holding 20kg vehicle cutters.
