And a big walk, section one of the Larapinta Trail to be precise, is now part of the iconic event.
“This year, we are offering the ultimate team challenge,” said Commodore Bill Palmer.
“The opportunity for people to walk the first leg of the Larapinta Trail and in the process, raise funds for charity.”
Money raised will fund an eye ultrasound machine for Alice Springs Hospital’s eye clinic, to aid cataract surgery.
The walk will take place on Friday, August 19, with walkers hiking from Simpsons Gap back into town.
When they arrive, a big party will be held; another addition to the Henley on Todd, with the Australian Navy Band and Adam Thompson from Chocolate Starfish the entertainment.
“Sixty per cent of people who attend the event are from outside Alice Springs, so not only do they get to attend, they also have a party,” Mr Palmer said.
The annual dry-riverbed regatta is now into its 55th year, the work of the three Rotary Clubs of Alice Springs.
“The total volunteer hours each year are up around 8000,” Mr Palmer said.
He was delighted to be commodore this year, a position earned by contributing to the Henley on Todd over the years.
Henley on Todd will be held on August 20.
