2024 Winter Shitbox rally wraps up in Alice Springs with hundreds of cars heading into town

A rag-tag group of cars and drivers have crossed into the Red Centre from Victoria and sold their ‘shitboxes’ – and it’s all for a good reason. Find out why.

More than 200 ‘shitboxes’ have rolled into the Red Centre, with locals lapping them up in an auction to raise money for charity.

The 2024 winter Shitbox rally wrapped up on Friday June 21, when 206 cars rolled into Alice Springs.

The cars had travelled a total 567km – with 325km being unsealed roads – on their way from Melbourne to the Red Centre.

Of the 212 cars that left, only six didn’t make the trip.

On Saturday June 22, the surviving cars were auctioned off with all the funds raised going to the Cancer Council.

Thirty-five vehicles were sold in the auction, which raised another $34,500 for the Cancer Council.

The rally has so far raised a total of $2.33 million for the Cancer Council.

Fundraising closes in two weeks, and in the meantime, the next rally planned will see a new set of teams travel from Bendigo to Townsville via Beetota, a Box Rallies spokesperson said.
