Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein announced on Sunday that masks would be mandatory in all indoor settings – including offices, restaurants, gyms, supermarkets and retail centres – from midnight Monday.

Masks will also need to be worn on public transport and in rideshare vehicles.

“We’ve done this before - a lot of Tasmanians are already doing it at the moment,” Mr Gutwein said.

He said people could remove their masks in gyms while taking part in strenuous exercise, including running.

“Just use your common sense as we go forward,” he said.

Of the new cases announced on Sunday, Mr Gutwein said one was a family member of a previous case who was in quarantine while another was a national traveller who went into isolation upon entering the state.

The third arrived in Launceston on Friday and had been active in the community over the past three days.

Earlier this week, Tasmania opened its borders to fully-vaccinated travellers.

More than 90 per cent of its population age over 16 is fully vaccinated.
