Injuries after gas explosion at Sydney CBD cafe on George St
A GAS explosion at a Sydney CBD cafe has injured at least two people.
A GAS explosion at a Sydney CBD cafe injured at least two people and blocked traffic on George St this morning.
A spokeswoman for NSW Police said the explosion appeared to have been caused by a gas stove in the kitchen of The Gardens cafe in George St.
Two fire crews were sent to the scene after receiving a call about 11.11am, a Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman said.
She said two people received “flash burns” when they opened the oven but the blaze didn’t spread to the rest of the kitchen.
The incident was described as a “minor explosion” and she said as a precaution firefighters evacuated the cafe and set up an exclusion zone until they could confirm there was no gas leak and the area was safe.
A spokeswoman for the Ambulance Service of NSW said two people were taken to St Vincent’s Hospital and were in a stable condition.
They reportedly suffered burns to their face and hands.
Police advised motorists to avoid the area as two lanes of traffic were blocked between Bridge and Jamison St, but the road has now reopened.
