Scott Morrison tears up while addressing Horizon Church after his election defeat

Outgoing Prime Minister Scott Morrison grew emotional as he addressed his church in Sydney today, at one point wiping away a tear.

Outgoing Prime Minister Scott Morrison attended his church in Sydney on Sunday morning, telling fellow churchgoers he was glad his last words in the top job were addressed to them.

Mr Morrison grew emotional as he quoted scripture to the audience at Horizon Church, a Pentecostal church in Sutherland Shire.

“Jenny and I and the girls are very grateful to our church family here,” he said.

“You’ve given us a great foundation from which we could walk what has been a very difficult walk, I’ve got to tell you, over the last four years.

“Whether you’re a prime minister, a pastor, running a business, teaching in schools, working in the police force, it doesn’t matter. We’re each called to trust and obey. And that’s the life of faith He calls us to. That’s how we live our faith each and every day, regardless of what your job is, and to express it in how you do that.”

Mr Morrison choked up and appeared to fight back tears as he kept speaking.

“I’m very pleased that the last thing I say as PM is here. So I’m not going to rely on my own words,” he said.

After a long pause, he gathered himself and proceeded to quote from the Bible passage Habakkuk 3:17.

“Even if the fig tree does not blossom, and there is no fruit on the vines, if the yield of the olive fails and if the fields produce no food, even if the flock is cut off from the fold and there are no cattle in the stalls, yet I will triumph in the Lord. I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.”

At one point Mr Morrison wiped away a tear.

Next up was an excerpt from Micah.

“As for me, I will be on the watch for the Lord. I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. Do not rejoice over me, enemy of mine. Though I fall, I will rise. Though I live in darkness, the Lord is a light for me,” Mr Morrison quoted.

“May God bless Australia. May God bless our community. And may God continue to show his favour on this wonderful church family.”

The congregation applauded Mr Morrison as he left the stage.

His address came shortly before several more seats were called for Labor, meaning it had passed the 76-seat threshold required to form a majority government. Anthony Albanese will be sworn in as the next prime minister tomorrow.

Labor has now won 77 seats, and the Coalition has been reduced to 54, with four electorates still in doubt.

Mr Morrison managed to pull off an upset, come-from-behind victory over Bill Shorten in 2019. This time the task was beyond him.

“Tonight, I have spoken to the Leader of the Opposition and the incoming prime minister, Anthony Albanese. And I’ve congratulated him on his election victory this evening,” he told the Liberals’ post-election event in Sydney last night.

“On a night like tonight it is proper to acknowledge the functioning of our democracy. I have always believed in Australians and their judgement and I’ve always been prepared to accept their verdicts and tonight they have delivered their verdict and I congratulate Anthony Albanese and the Labor Party and I wish him and his government all the very best.

“Now there are many votes still to count, that is true. There are many pre-polls and postles that will still come in. But I believe it’s very important that this country has certainty. I think it’s very important this country can move forward.”

Mr Morrison also confirmed he would be resigning as the leader of the Liberal Party.

“To my colleagues tonight, who have had to deal with very difficult news, and have lost their seats tonight, I as leader take responsibility for the wins and the losses. That is the burden and that is the responsibility of leadership,” he said.

“As a result I will be handing over the leadership at the next party room meeting to ensure the party can be taken forward under new leadership which is the appropriate thing to do.”
