Scott Morrison leaves Kirribilli House after election defeat by Labor’s Anthony Albanese

‘Sentiment’ of Albanese’s victory speech will ‘ring through the ages’

Scott Morrison has been seen leaving Kirribilli House for the first time since his federal election loss.

Mr Morrison was photographed leaving the prime minister’s official Sydney residence shortly before 9am on Sunday.

Mr Morrison left the property with his wife Jenny, his mother and his mother-in-law.

The Morrisons departed in a three-car convoy that travelled past the journalists, photographers and camera operators stationed outside the gates of the property.

Mr Morrison didn’t stop to speak to the media, as reporters speculated whether he was on his way to church or back to his local electorate of Cook, which he held onto amid the Liberals’ historic loss.

Mr Morrison announced last night he would step down as Liberal leader after leading the Coalition to an election defeat after it spent almost a decade in government.

The Coalition is likely to have lost five Liberal heartland seats to “teal” independents, as well as some other losses to Labor.

The results mean Mr Morrison will have to hand over the keys to Kirribilli House and the Lodge in Canberra to Anthony Albanese — Australia’s 31st prime minister-elect.

But the Labor leader will need to wait until the final results are tallied to find out whether he can form a majority government or if he will need the support of independents and minor parties.

A number of seats were still in doubt on Sunday morning.
