Sydney shock jock Ray Hadley has blown up at Anthony Albanese in an extraordinary wide-ranging live radio interview.

The 2GB Radio host spent more than 27 minutes interrogating the Labor leader on Tuesday morning, shouting at him about a variety of topics including his policies on asylum seekers, climate change and a federal anti-corruption commission.

Mr Albanese remained relatively measured as the conservative radio host yelled at him.

During the remarkable interview, Hadley made Mr Albanese repeat after him live on air that “there will be no carbon tax ever” under a Labor government.

After asking Mr Albanese how he was going in Covid-19 isolation, the first flashpoint emerged as Hadley pressed his guest on how he would deal with boat arrivals without temporary protection visas.

Hadley played the sound of a horn, which he claimed was the sound of a “boat off Northern Australia” carrying people who “can’t be turned back. So they’ll come to Australia”.

Labor has for years supported offshore detention and boat turnbacks, which make up two of the three pillars of the Coalition’s operation sovereign borders.

But Labor doesn’t support temporary protection visas on the basis they can leave people in limbo.

Mr Albanese told Hadley on Tuesday any people who arrived by boat and couldn’t safely be turned back would be sent to offshore detention in Nauru.

But Hadley persisted, saying: “They’ll go straight from the boat to Nauru would they? Good luck.”

Mr Albanese said a Labor government would have the same policy as the Coalition, prompting a furious tirade from Hadley.

“No you won’t, because you won’t have temporary protection visas,” Hadley said.

“Because you’re terrified of what (Labor senators) Kristina Keneally and Penny Wong will do to you if you do have them. You know the only way to stop the boats is to have a three-pronged attack.”

Hadley again acknowledged his interviewee had Covid-19 about 24 minutes into their heated exchange: “I realise you’re crook and I do appreciate it”.

Mr Albanese remained relatively calm as Hadley goaded him about Labor’s policies for engagement with China.

Hadley said of deputy Labor leader Richard Marles: “He seems to think the best way of dealing with China is to get down to (Sydney restaurant) Golden Century when it reopens and have yum cha with President Xi (Jinping)”.

Mr Albanese also stared down Hadley’s criticism of his decision to fly to Perth when the WA border reopened amid the flooding crisis in his home state of NSW.

“You went to Perth when Marrickville was under water,” Hadley said.

Mr Albanese suggested Hadley “have a look at the map”, pointing out “I don’t have any rivers flowing through my electorate”.

Hadley wrapped up the interview by attacking Mr Albanese over the allegations the late Labor senator Kimberley Kitching was bullied by party colleagues before her death.

Mr Albanese said he didn’t accept the characterisation of “workplace bullying”.

The Opposition Leader concluded by saying he loved Australia dearly.

“I’m passionate about making a difference. That’s why I’m running for prime minister – to make a difference to this country.”
