MALCOLM Turnbull wants to get people talking about black spots.

The prime minister will today pledge an extra $60 million to fix mobile phone black spots — boosting the program Tony Abbott announced in the previous election campaign to $220 million.

There are more than 6000 mobile black spots across Australia, with regional communities suffering the most.

The new money will cover locations that have not previously received funding or have been overlooked by network operators because they are uncommercial.

Mr Turnbull will pledge the additional funds for mobile black spots as his campaign heads to the southwest Victorian seat of Corangamite.

The new money will cover locations that have not previously received funding or have been overlooked by network operators because they are uncommercial.

It will mean emergency services can respond faster to car accidents and natural disasters and more opportunities for farmers and businesses, the government said.

According to Telstra, the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program is “one of the largest ever expansions of mobile coverage in regional and remote Australia”.

Labor has yet to announce its own plan to fix coverage in these areas.
