LNP candidate Vivian Lobo referred to Federal Police by AEC

The AEC has referred an LNP candidate to federal police for investigation after allegedly committing enrolment fraud regarding his address.

A Queensland Liberal National Party candidate could be investigated by Australian Federal Police after allegedly lying about where he was living.

Vivian Lobo, the LNP candidate for Queensland’s most marginal seat Lilley, allegedly provided false information to the Australian Electoral Commission and has not been living in the electorate he is running for, as reported by The Australian on Friday.

The publication said Mr Lobo has been living in the neighbouring electorate of Brisbane, rather than the address he provided in Lilley to the AEC, a property in Everton Park.

When the allegations came to light on Friday, the AEC said it was “reviewing the circumstances” of Mr Lobo’s residence on Friday.

But on Sunday, the Commission said “there is concern” the information on his enrolment and nomination forms is “false”.

“Following Mr Lobo’s candidate nomination for the 2022 federal election we have reviewed the declarations made on Mr Lobo’s enrolment and nomination forms,” the AEC said in a statement.

“There is concern as to whether the information provided by him regarding his residential address on these forms is false.”

The AEC also said it has referred this matter to the AFP for investigation.

When The Australian visited the property in Everton Park on Thursday they found a “run-down” home, while neighbours told the publication no one has lived there for at least a year.

Labor MP for Lilley Anika Wells told the ABC on Friday that Prime Minister Scott Morrison needs to disavow Mr Lobo as a candidate.

“I don’t think this government is taking my community seriously by acting like that,” she said.

Ms Wells currently holds the seat of Lilley with a slight margin of just 0.6 per cent.

The AEC said the candidate nominations must remain in place as early voting is set to begin on Monday and many postal votes have already been filled out.
