Live Updates

Liberals likely to pick up one more seat

The Australian is saying the Liberals are likely to win Menzies in Victoria, with Keith Wolahan expected to win Kevin Andrews' old seat.

It comes after The Australian said the Liberals were likely to win Moore in WA and Labor set to win Lyons in Tasmania.

It means Gilmore in NSW, where former NSW Treasurer Andrew Constance is trying to break into federal politics for the Liberals, and Sturt in SA are the only two seats now up in the air according to The Australian.

Update on five undecided seats

There were five seats still in doubt on Monday, but The Australian has now made calls on how two will fall.

Labor's Brian Mitchell is likely to win Lyons in Tasmania, and in Moore in WA, Ian Goodenough for the Liberals is likely to win.

If those seats fall that way, Labor would move to 77 seats and the Coalition to 56 seats.

That means Gilmore in NSW, Sturt in SA and Menzies in Victoria still remain in doubt.

The seats where the Liberal vote actually increased

It wasn't a great election for the Liberals, but there were some seats where the party's vote actually increased.

The Liberals had swings in their favour in 16 seats.

In NSW, the Liberal vote rose in Whitlam, Paterson, Braddon and Gilmore (which remains in doubt). In Victoria, it was Calwell, Gorton, Fraser, Hawke, La Trobe, McEwen, Holt and Scullin.

Elsewhere they saw gains in Lyons in Tasmania (that seat remains in doubt), Lingiari (NT), Herbert (QLD) and Bass (Tasmania).

The bad news (for the Liberals) is Labor won 10 of those 16 seats despite the swing against them, and are ahead in Lyons.

How close the remaining seats are

This is how close some of the remaining seats are.

Gilmore in NSW is separated by only 306 votes, with Andrew Constance ahead.

Lyons in Tasmania has Labor's Brian Mitchell ahead by 833 votes.

Menzies in Victoria has Liberals' Keith Wolahan ahead by 624 votes.

Moore in WA is a little better for Ian Goodenough (Liberals), with a 1138 vote lead.

And Sturt in SA only has 723 votes in it, with James Stevens just head for the Liberals.

How the next parliament will look

As of Monday morning, here is how the next parliament is going to look like:

Labor: 76 seats

Coalition: 54 seats

Greens: 4 seats

Independents: 10 seats (Andrew Wilkie – Tasmania, Celia Hammond – WA, Dai Le – NSW, Zoe Daniel – Vic, Helen Haines – Vic, Monique Ryan – Vic, Sophie Scamps – NSW, Kylea Jane Tink – NSW, Zali Steggall – NSW, Allegra Spender – NSW)

Katter's Australia Party: 1 seat

Centre Alliance: 1 seat

In doubt: 5 seats

If those five seats fall as they stand now, Labor could finish on 77 seats, and the Coalition on 58 seats.

The five seats still in doubt

On Monday morning, there are still five seats in doubt.

Gilmore (NSW): Ex-NSW Treasurer Andrew Constance (Liberals) holds a slight lead (50.15 per cent to 49.85 per cent) over Labor's Fiona Phillips with 83.13 per cent of votes counted.

Lyons (Tasmania): With 75 per cent of the votes counted, Labor's Brian Mitchell is slightly ahead on 50.59 per cent over the Liberals' Susie Bower.

Menzies (Victoria): The Liberals hold a slight lead with Keith Wolahan (50.4 per cent) just in front of Labor's Naomi Oakley (49.6 per cent).

Moore (WA): The Liberals' Ian Goodenough is on 50.7 per cent is ahead of Labor's Tom French (49.3 per cent).

Sturt (SA): James Stevens is on 50.41 per cent to hold a slight lead for the Liberals, with Labor's Sonja Baram on 49.59 per cent.

Labor reaches majority

Our election tally now has Labor with 76 seats.

Labor's Jerome Laxale is the likely winner over the Liberals' Simon Kennedy in Bennelong, and Michael Sukkar has been unseated by Matt Gregg in Deakin. Gilmore was earlier given to the ALP but further counting has seen it return to the seats in doubt.

Lingiari, NT – ALP likely (Marion Scrymgour)
Cowper, NSW – NAT retains (Pat Conaghan)
Bennelong, NSW – ALP likely (Jerome Laxale)
O'Connor, WA – LIB retains (Rick Wilson)
Deakin, VIC – ALP likely (Matt Gregg)

Five seats remain in doubt.

Gilmore, NSW – ALP likely (Fiona Phillips)
Lyons, TAS (ALP)
Menzies, VIC (LIB)
Moore, WA (LIB)
Sturt, SA (LIB)

Postal vote counting continues today

The Australian Electoral Commission has provided an update on what's happening today.

"Today is another busy day but one that consists of mostly logistical arrangements with only small updates to results expected on the tally room," the AEC says.

Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers says, "We'll have small postal vote counts appearing in the AEC tally room throughout the day, starting from this morning.

"Postal vote counts started on the Tuesday after election day in 2019 but we've brought that forward in recognition of the large volume and our ability this election to sort them earlier than in the past.

"These indicative postal vote counts early in the count period can provide an important trend for analysts."

Where things stand this morning

Good morning. It's the day after the election and Labor has won a resounding victory, but counting continues.

Our current tally hasn't moved – Labor is on 73 seats, the Coalition 53, others on 16 and nine seats still in doubt.

Of those three are Labor-held – Gilmore in NSW, Lingiari in NT and Lyons in TAS.

The remaining six are Coalition seats – Bennelong and Cowper in NSW, Deakin and Menzies in VIC, Moore in WA and Sturt in SA.
