The latest Newspoll has Peter Dutton closing the gap on Anthony Albanese as preferred Prime Minister despite Labor narrowly extending its lead.

Labor has narrowly extended its lead in the latest Newspoll despite Peter Dutton gaining on Anthony Albanese as preferred Prime Minister.

It comes after Mr Albanese mocked Peter Dutton, and accused the Coalition of planning to cut Medicare to fund its nuclear policy, during a Labor rally in Queensland.

Meanwhile, Mr Dutton was given the rock star treatment during his first visit of the campaign to Tasmania where he recalled the gut-wrenching moment he feared he had killed his dad on Father’s Day.
