Anthony Albanese has jokingly likened negotiations in choosing a wedding song with fiancée Jodie Haydon to the rough and tumble of current day international relations.

“I am getting married in the second half of the year … I’ve been very lucky, very fortunate to meet Jodie at this time in my life and someone who we want to spend the rest of our lives together,” he told Campbell.

“We have gone through a range of music that can be played as a wedding song, and I’ve got to say … it will be easier to work through the global geopolitical position than it is to come up with a single song I think at this point in time.

“We do have slightly different musical tastes.”

In response Campbell, a former journalist in the UK and press secretary to UK Labour prime minister Tony Blair, said: “Well, if I were you, I’d let her decide”.

Earlier in the podcast, Mr Albanese was also asked about the impact of US President Donald Trump on the Australian election, with the Labor government still in talks to achieve a carve out from sweeping tariffs on Australian goods.

So far, Australia has been subjected to a 25 per cent levy on steel and aluminium, in addition to a general 10 per cent levy on imports.

He also reiterated Australia’s commitment with backing Ukraine amid its ongoing invasion by Russia, despite the US threatening to back away from its attempt to broker a peace efforts.

“The actions have been barbaric by Russia. We’ve called it out, we’ll continue to put sanctions on and we’ll stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes,” Mr Albanese said.

Earlier in the program Mr Albanese was also asked for the “three pieces of rock music that you would take to your desert island”.

Struggling to answer, an exasperated Mr Albanese joked that “I’d abandon food and water to take more,” however shared an edit of his favourite Australian artists.

“One would be Cold Chisel, one would be Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, who of course is bigger in the UK than he is in Australia,” he said.

He also shared his favourite Australian female artists who he noted were “really producing some amazing music,” listing Angie McMahon, non-binary Melbourne songwriter G Flip, and Sarah Blasko.

Of Blasko’s latest album I Just Need To Conquer This Mountain, he said it was “amazing for something a bit quieter to chill out to on a Sunday afternoon”.

“I’ll take the opportunity to promote some younger and not so young women coming up, G Flip, Angie McMahon. Sarah Blasko’s new album is amazing for something a bit quieter to chill out to on a Sunday afternoon as well.”

While Mr Albanese has been mum on the wedding date, he is set to tie the knot with Ms Haydon later this year following the election on May 3.

The couple got engaged at his Canberra residence The Lodge on Valentine’s Day in 2024 following a dinner at Italian and Sons earlier.

The pair met in 2020 during a speaking event featuring the then-Opposition Leader. Mr Albanese said asked if there were any fans of the South Sydney NRL team in the audience, to which Ms Haydon shouted: “Up the Rabbitohs”.

Speaking to The Australian Women’s Weekly earlier this year, Mr Albanese said he later introduced himself.

“We had what I thought would just be a drink at Young Henrys in Newtown, and we got on really well. That’s how it started,” he said.
