Clive Palmer candidate Ingram Spencer refuses to face court

A candidate for mining magnate Clive Palmer’s political party has refused to face court over harassment allegations.

Australia's Court System

A candidate for mining magnate Clive Palmer’s political party won’t entertain the “corrupt” justice system, a court has been told.

Ingram Spencer is remanded in custody, charged with 13 offences including using a carriage service to menace or harass another person.

He was due to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

But for the second time the 38-year-old candidate for the United Australia Party refused to appear before the court.

He is standing in Higgins, a blue-ribbon seat in Melbourne’s inner south east which encompasses leafy Toorak.

A custody officer addressed magistrate David Fanning about why Mr Ingram was not before the court.

“He said he doesn’t trust the system,” the official said.

“He doesn’t trust the judge. and the lawyers, it’s all corruption.”

“[Mr Ingram] won’t entertain it, he reckons,” the man said.

The custody officer explained they had gone into the cells to arrange a meeting with his lawyers but Mr Ingram refused to interact with them at all.

Victorian Legal Aid lawyer Lily Yan told the magistrate the body appeared for Mr Ingram when he was taken into custody on April 27.

“He refused to engage,” Ms Yan told the court.

“They managed to get a phone call but he remained mute throughout,” she said.

The aspiring politician was also being monitored for his mental health but had refused to engage with anyone, the court was told.

At his previous hearing last week Mr Ingram also refused to speak to lawyer Tony Hargreaves who was contacted by his parents from England.

“I’m grateful for your attendance, otherwise I would know nothing, or next to nothing,” Mr Fanning said.

A spokesman for the UAP said everyone is innocent until proven guilty but confirmed Mr Ingram also refused to speak to party representatives.

The hearing was adjourned for another week.
