Slemnik, a father of four, was protecting the boss of the Hells Angels Sydney chapter, Suvat Sarimsaklioglu, when he was shot.

At the time the Hells Angels and Comanchero gangs were locked in a vicious battle for control of Sydney's lucrative drug trade in the Eastern suburbs.

This had resulted in drive-by shootings and bashings between the two groups all over Sydney.
