Labor leader Anthony Albanese has urged the Prime Minister to stop playing the ukulele, welding without a mask on and simply “do your day job” after a sharp increase in campaign ”stunts.”

The Opposition leader unleashed on the Prime Minister as both the major parties campaigned in key battleground seats in Tasmania.

Amid a backlash over the Prime Minister being captured trying to weld while lifting up his mask, Mr Albanese said the stunts were becoming “bizarre.”

“This Prime Minister seems to be more interested in stunts than he is in doing his day job,‘’ Mr Albanese said.

“I notice, on the issue of the rather bizarre welding exercise that occurred in Darwin last Friday, that he said, well, it‘s not his day job.

“I say to the Prime Minister, do your day job, forget about the photo ops and the shampooing people‘s hair, and driving motor cars, and the welding, and indeed, maybe even the ukulele playing, he can give that a miss too, and do your day job.”

Mr Albanese’s sledge came after Mr Morrison hit back at online criticism of his welding technique after the video of him went viral.

In an echo of his famous comment that he “doesn‘t hold a hose, mate” during the bushfires he admitted that welding was “not my day job”.

“If people want to have a crack at me about that they can … I’ve got a lot to learn if I want to do those jobs,” he told 2GB.

“I just think our apprentices and the small businesses that are giving them a go are fantastic.

“And if all the narcs in the bubble want to have a crack at me, well, they can – but what I’m doing is showcasing the great work of our apprentices and small businesses.”

Speaking in Tasmania, Mr Albanese said it was “very important” that there was a change in government.

“I think this is a Government that has failed on key criteria this term,‘’ he said.

“They failed to order enough vaccines. Before that, they failed to respond appropriately to the bushfire crisis. Then they failed when it came to rapid antigen tests. They‘re continuing to fail when it comes to looking after aged care.”
