One of the biggest sales events of the year moves into its final day today with Cyber Monday rounding out the four day shopping event that started with Black Friday last week.

The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) CEO Paul Zahra predicted on Friday

$5.4 billion would be spent over the over the four day sales period — equating to almost a million dollars a minute.

“There’s just 28 days to go till Christmas and retailers are in full swing, ramping up their operations for the busiest time of year on the retail calendar,” Mr Zahra said.

Some retailers are continuing their Black Friday offers for one more day while other have announced new deals and discounts.

But how can you make sure you’re bagging a bargain when visiting a digital store? Here are 10 tips to unlock the biggest discounts.

— Add items to your cart: This is a cheeky way to unlock a surprise discount. Sometimes online stores or even eBay traders will offer a discount as extra motivation if you leave an item in your digital shopping cart overnight.

— Create a wishlist: Many online stores will let you save your favourites, from ASOS to Amazon, eBay to The Iconic. By watching your favourite items, you can easily locate and check them for discounts when sales are announced.

— Promo or discount codes: Even if your desired item doesn’t appear to be on sale, it’s worth scouring the internet for a ‘promo’ code. Most sites have an input for these codes at checkout and there are websites dedicated to publishing them.

— Guess a promo code: It’s not a guaranteed way to bag a bargain but you can guess a promo code by adding a word and a discount figure to the end, such as BLACKFRIDAY10.

— Sign up to a price-watching site: These websites scrape pricing information and can send you an alert when an item has dropped in price. Examples including Camelcamelcamel.com and pricehipster.com.

— Set an alert: Some finance apps will let you set an alert for the moment a particular item goes on sale. Buy-now-pay-later app Klarna, for example, can be used to monitor saved items for price changes and also offers an iPhone widget for sales.

— Join a savvy shopping forum: Sites like OzBargain and Finder.com.au regularly publish sale and discount information.

— Price-beat guarantees: Don’t be afraid to request a lower price from your favourite retailer if they offer to beat rival prices. Shops with this guarantee include Officeworks, Dan Murphy’s, Bunnings, The Good Guys, and Chemist Warehouse.

— Follow stores online: It sounds simple but you’ll often see discounts first if you follow your favourite brands on social media. Sign up for alerts if you’re very keen.

— Consider a refurbished product: Some big-name brands and stores also sell refurbished, “renewed,” and open box products at a substantial discount, like Apple, Amazon, and Boost Mobile. These are not only available cheaper but are still covered by a warranty.
