WA Police Commissioner promises more arrests after ‘disturbing’ all-in brawl involving up to 100 people
Police have vowed to charge up to one hundred people involved in a massive street fight that required dozens of officers to stop.
West Australian Police have promised to lay more charges on the one hundred people involved in an all-in brawl on Friday night that turned Perth’s usually tranquil Kings Park into a place of terror.
WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said he was “certain” more charges would come from the late night fight, that kicked off when two party busloads full of people were dropped in the Perth park.
The brutal brawl, which left one man in hospital with a broken jaw, nose and severe head injuries, required 16 police cars to respond when it kicked off just after 10.30pm on Friday night.
Commissioner Dawson said the two groups had “coincidentally” met out the front of Fraser’s Restaurant in the picturesque park but the meeting quickly turned “violent”.
“There was a lot of aggression, a lot of fighting. Several people were knocked unconscious. it took police quite some time to bring the brawl under control,” he said.
Some of the group had grabbed sticks, weapons and other things they could grab from the garden and were “attacking each other quite violently”, police said.
Commissioner Dawson confirmed the two groups were known to each other and there had been a “history of aggression” between them.
A woman who was giving first aid to one of the injured men also had her handbag stolen in the chaos.
Three people were arrested by police on the night and many more were told to move on.
Police are now appealing to the public for any footage or pictures they might have taken of the brawl and want witnesses to come forward.
Kings Park was briefly locked down by more than dozen police cars as officers from Perth, the canine unit and the regional operations group — a quick response team trained for public order issues — worked to control the situation.
Families and tourists who spent their night in the park — which offers sweeping views of Perth — sought refuge inside Fraser’s Restaurant and behind bushes as the dozens of partygoers fought outside.
“It was pretty frightening scenes, a lot of young people all intoxicated, all fighting, ripping up placards and hitting each other over the head,” witness Michael Ogilvie told The West.
“There were bottles flying around, people fighting everywhere.”
Another witness Teagan Swallows described the carnage.
“They were throwing barstools … breaking everything and anything that got in their way,” she said.
A female bus driver barricaded herself inside her vehicle as the group threw things and physically fought.
Commissioner Dawson described the fight as “disturbing” and said it was especially disappointing the brawl took place in Kings Park.
“The fact this happened at Kings Park, which is such a special place for all Australians is very disturbing,” he said.
“We deployed as many police as we could to control that situation and we will be following up with an investigation.”
A WA Police spokeswoman said the assault investigation is still ongoing.
Witnesses to the out-of-control gathering are urged to submit their evidence here.
