Two Queensland men charged over shock act at Canberra Airport
Two men have been charged after a shocking act was allegedly captured on CCTV at Canberra Airport.
A man stopped by police at Canberra airport while trying to return to Queensland has been charged with breaching safety laws, after he allegedly encouraged a teenager to ride the luggage carousel.
Australian Federal Police stopped the 58-year-old man and 14-year-old child before their scheduled flight at Canberra Airport on Sunday following reports to police.
Police allege two men were caught on CCTV on July 2 filming the 14-year-old as he entered a secured area of the airport, with footage also being seized from the 58-year-old’s phone taken by police.
In a statement, AFP Detective Acting Inspector Jon Horrocks said police had zero tolerance for poor behaviour at airports.
“Airport security is no joke and restrictions exist to ensure the safety and security of the travelling public and workers,” he said.
“Canberra Airport Group, the AFP, and industry partners take any security breaches at airports seriously and people can be prosecuted if they commit a criminal offence.”
The two individuals were charged with entering a security restricted area at a designated airport through access control points, contrary to regulation 3.16B of the Aviation Transport Security Regulations 2005.
The man is scheduled to appear before ACT Magistrates Court on October 3.
