A South Australian man will be charged with murder today after another man was allegedly beaten to death in a home three hours north of Adelaide.

Police were called to a house in the regional town of Peterborough following complaints of a disturbance shortly after 1am today.

When officers arrived, a man was being treated by ambulance suffering injuries from an assault but they were unsuccessful and the 46-year-old died at the scene.

The suspect had fled the house before police had arrived but he was later found and arrested in the town.

The 49-year-old man from the state’s mid north was taken into custody and is likely to be charged with murder later today.

He is then expected to appear in the Port Pirie Magistrates Court on Monday.

Police say the attack was not random and the two men were known to each other.

The state’s major crime detectives and forensic officers are on their way to the scene of the alleged murder to assist local police.
