Woman charged after allegedly stabbing Woolworths worker

New details about the ‘completely random’ Woolworths stabbing have been revealed as a woman is charged over the attack.

A woman has been charged after the allegedly “completely random” and “unprovoked” stabbing of a supermarket employee at a shopping centre in Perth.

The 44-year-old victim was stacking shelves in the pet food aisle of a Woolworths store in Ellenbrook when she was allegedly stabbed in the back about 1pm on Tuesday.

Police said the victim did not know her attacker and there was no prior interaction between them before the alleged incident.

“There was nothing said or anything to indicate that this was going to happen,” Midland Police Detective Sergeant Tania MacKenzie told reporters

“(It is) something I’ve never heard of happening before in my career.

“It was just someone going about their day-to-day work, stacking shelves in the shopping centre.

“There’s been no one else in the aisle and she’s been approached by the suspect who has stabbed her with a filleting knife.”

Sergeant Mackenzie said the victim initially thought she had been hit by a shopping trolley before she realised she had been stabbed in the lower back.

The knife was still lodged in her body when she was taken to hospital.

About two hours later, police arrested a 35-year-old woman at a Bullsbrook home after receiving a tip off.

The alleged attacker underwent a medical assessment on Tuesday.

Police revealed on Wednesday morning that the woman had been charged with attempting to unlawfully kill.

She will face Midland Magistrates Court later on Wednesday.

Woolworths said it was providing support to the alleged victim and offering counselling to staff members.
