Police have landed a major blow against an alleged Asian drug syndicate trafficking drugs in Victoria and Western Australia following an arrest in Melbourne’s west.

Detectives from Victoria’s Major Drug Squad swooped on a home in West Footscray on Thursday and allegedly seized 2kg of methylamphetamine and 1kg of cocaine.

A 31-year-old man was arrested following the raid and charged with trafficking large commercial quantities of both drugs, marking a milestone in a months-long investigation.

Victoria Police launched an investigation in July following information provided to detectives by police across the border in WA about the syndicate.

Detective Acting Inspector Damien O’Mahoney commended the work of both police departments.

“Those involved in the trafficking of drugs have little respect for state borders, so it’s important that Victoria Police works closely with our counterparts interstate,” he said.

“Yesterday’s arrest will have an impact not only here in Victoria but also in WA and by seizing those drugs they won’t be able to cause further harm to our community.”

The man was remanded into custody to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on January 9.
