Muslim woman allegedly had hijab ripped off in attack
A MUSLIM woman was allegedly attacked in Melbourne yesterday which has left others in her community shaken, shocked and scared.
A MUSLIM woman was allegedly the victim of a terrorising attack outside Melbourne’s State Library yesterday.
The Islamophobia Register Australia reported a man tried to rip off her hijab and tripped her over twice.
The group also reported a 16-year-old onlooker, who is also a Muslim, attempted to help the Dandenong woman, but the man allegedly held a knife to his face before fleeing the scene.
Victoria Police are investigating the assault but said they were unaware of weapons being brandished and did not believe the man tried to remove the woman’s hijab.
It’s believed the victim and the offender do not know each other and police are investigating whether the incident was racially motivated.
The woman was checked by paramedics at the scene but was uninjured.
The father of the 16-year-old boy contacted the Islamophobia Register Australia and said his son was shaken up and has been referred to a counselling service.
He has concerns for the young woman whose identity is unknown.
The attacker allegedly has a strong build, was not wearing a shirt and has tattoos branded across his chest.
Muslims have taken to Facebook to express their shock of the incident with one social media user saying “I was their (sic) when it happened I’m still shaking and shocked we are not safe anymore”.
Others have labelled the attack as “shameful” and “disgusting”.
Another person commented on the Islamophobia Register Australia Facebook page “No one is safe anymore. Theirs (sic) more anti-Islamic attacks than Islamic attackers. And yet we are still branded as terrorists. #wakeupaustralia #freedomoffaith”.
Some Muslims expressed fear but the Islamophobia Register Australia pleaded to them to not let the attack stop them from “participating in public life.”
