Police have laid charges after an alleged “targeted” gangland shooting left a man dead outside his family home in broad daylight.

Emergency services were first called to Sutherland St in Canley Heights about 6.50pm on December 29 following reports of a shooting.

The 31-year-old victim was treated by paramedics for gunshot wounds, but died at the scene.

In an update on Monday, NSW Police said officers attached to Raptor Squad Traffic & Highway Patrol Command stopped a vehicle on Cowpasture Rd in Cecil Hills and arrested the driver – a 33-year-old man.

A search warrant was also executed on an address in Bossley Park.

He has since been charged with accessory after the fact to murder and driver not disclose identity of driver/passenger as required, and will front Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday.

Earlier, Fairfield Police Detective Acting Superintendent Jason Pietruszka said the 31-year-old victim was allegedly in his car outside his home when an unknown person approached the driver-side window and fired a number of shots before fleeing in a white Audi, which was later found on fire.

The 31-year-old allegedly managed to get out of the car and run a short distance to his neighbour’s lawn before he died.

“He died outside his family residence — still daylight and he’s collapsed on a neighbour’s front lawn … it’s a very sad tragic situation, its terrible for his family,” State Crime Command Homicide Squad Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said.

“They’re still grieving.”

The hunt for the culprit began immediately after the shooting, with detectives from the Fairfield City Police Area Command and the state crime command’s homicide squad forming strike force Loughrea to investigate.

Police allege the 31-year-old victim had links to Asian organised crime syndicates, including illicit drug activity.

Superintendent Doherty called the shooting “brazen” and “unacceptable”.

“It happened outside a family residence — he’s only 31 years of age,” he said.

“It’s shocking for the family and they’re still grieving and emotionally trying to manage this whole situation.”

Police believe the two incidents are linked.
