The identity of a high-profile man targeted during an alleged botched assassination attempt on a busy street in Sydney’s glitzy eastern suburbs earlier this year has been revealed.

An interim order suppressing the name of Sydney identity John Ibrahim as being the intended target of alleged attempted hit was lifted by the Downing Centre Court on Thursday.

Mr Ibrahim’s lawyer, Abbas Soukie, told Magistrate Daniel Covington the interim suppression order prohibiting publication of Mr Ibrahim’s name was to be revoked.

It comes after the two men charged over the alleged attempted assassination, Siaosi Maeakafa Tupoulahi, 24, and Yousif Zrayka, 20, fronted court again earlier that same week.

Police allege Mr Tupoulahi pointed a loaded pistol at the driver of a BMW hatchback carrying a child, who was in the passenger seat, for 10 seconds shortly after 8am on July 25.

Police allege the 24-year-old carpenter was targeting the high-profile owner a luxury vehicle, later revealed as being Mr Ibrahim, but mistakenly approached the wrong car.

Officers allege Mr Tupoulahi fled the scene in a stolen rental car driven by Mr Zrayka, before the pair were later stopped by officers who subdued the carpenter with a Taser.

A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered two weapons – a loaded black revolver and a loaded semiautomatic pistol – as well as rubber gloves, and jerry cans full of petrol.

Mr Tupoulahi is facing 14 charges, including conspiring to murder a person, possession of a loaded firearm in a public place, and assaulting a police officer in the execution of their duty.

John Ibrahim rose to prominence as a former owner of a Kings Cross nightclub.

More recently, he has become the subject of multiple dramaticized television series.
