Gangland boss discharged from hospital after jail attack
Gangland identity Tony Mokbel has left hospital nine days after sustaining life threatening injuries in a gruesome jailhouse attack.
Victorian drug kingpin Tony Mokbel has been released from hospital nine days after a vicious prison attack left him with life threatening injuries.
Mokbel, 53, was stabbed and reportedly had his head stomped after he was allegedly set upon by two fellow inmates in Victoria’s maximum security Barwon Prison on February 11.
The notorious gangland identity was discharged from Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition, a spokeswoman told AAP on Wednesday.
“He’s no longer here as a patient,” she said.
Teira Bennett and Eldea Teuira, both 21, have been charged with attempted murder over the alleged attack.
Another inmate, identified as 31-year-old Steve Logan, was also attacked after he attempted to intervene on behalf of Mokbel.
Mokbel is serving a 30-year sentence for multiple counts of drug trafficking.
Police and prison authorities had opened an initial inquiry into the attack, which happened a day after media reports were published saying Mokbel had intervened in an extortion racket run by Pacific Islander inmates.
Justice David Ipp will lead an independent review to examine the circumstances leading up to the assault, which left Mokbel fighting for life in hospital.
Justice Ipp is a former NSW Court of Appeal Judge and a former commissioner of the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption.
He will be assisted in his inquiry by former Queensland Corrective Services commissioner Dr Mark Rallings.
Their report is due by the end of April.
