‘Excruciating pain’: Babysitter jailed after judge rejects his excuse for putting toddler‘s hands in boiling water
A babysitter has been jailed for putting a toddler’s hand in boiling water, leaving the little girl disfigured.
A babysitter has been jailed for five years for putting a toddler’s hands in a pot of boiling water, causing third-degree burns.
Jaycob Anfernee John Yarran, 25, was taking care of the two-year-old girl when he claimed the child knocked over a bowl of instant noodles, causing the severe injury at a Maddington home, in Perth, in September 2019.
Despite his claims, Perth District Court found him guilty of deliberately harming the child, leading to grievous injuries on the body after a trial, and he was sentenced to five year’s jail with a non-parole period of three years.
The court heard that the Perth man did not immediately call an ambulance after the incident and instead put the girl under a cold shower to ease her burns.
In sentencing this week, Judge Alan Young said, “You subjected her to excruciating pain.”
“She was exceptionally vulnerable. I find you must have known how painful it would have been … you used boiling water as a weapon.
“This was completely unjustified, fortuitous violence.
“You show no remorse… and didn‘t call an ambulance to protect yourself,” Judge Young said.
The court also heard the girl suffers nightmares as the result of the traumatic event- screaming ‘don’t touch me’ - and still needs ongoing treatment for skin grafts and scar stretching long after the incident.
A specialist in burns gave evidence at the trial and said she had never seen in her career injuries as deep as the burns suffered by the girl.
The burns were so horrific the girl permanently lost three of her fingernails.
The child’s grandfather told journalists outside court he thought the punishment should have been harsher.
“He’ll be out in a few years, and my granddaughter will be scarred for life,” he said.
It is understood that Yarran‘s family plans to appeal the sentencing.
